Updated: 23 October 2026

What the APFC interview should demonstrate

Prepare to explain social security accurately, apply rules fairly, communicate with workers and employers, and exercise administrative judgment. Memorised section numbers help only if you can explain the underlying issue. The questions below are practice prompts, not a claim to predict the panel.

The 2026 advertisement assigns 100 interview marks with a 75:25 RT/interview weightage. Interview suitability benchmarks are distinct from the written cut-off. Follow the interview letter for required originals, formats and reporting instructions.

If you already work in government, explain the transferable skills from your actual role and the procedure followed for applying. State facts supported by your documents; do not improvise an eligibility or NOC claim.

EPFO organisation and functions

EPFO is a statutory social-security organisation under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Prepare the Central Board’s tripartite character, the administrative organisation and the different purposes of provident fund, pension and deposit-linked insurance. APFC work can include coverage/compliance administration, determination and recovery-related processes where authorised, claims and service delivery, grievance handling and supervision.

Prepare the relationship among the Ministry, Central Board, Central Provident Fund Commissioner and field offices. Learn your region’s office structure from the official EPFO site. Do not assume a particular first posting or statutory delegation merely from the job title.

20 expected-theme practice questions

1. Tell us about yourself.

Use 60–90 seconds: education, current work, one relevant skill and why that experience fits social-security administration. Keep biographical detail selective.

2. Why APFC?

Connect the role with worker protection, lawful employer compliance, field administration and reliable service delivery. Add a concrete example from your experience.

3. What is social security?

Explain protection against income/health risks across the life cycle, then distinguish contributory social insurance from tax-funded assistance.

4. How are EPF, EPS and EDLI different?

Savings, pension and death-linked insurance serve different purposes. Mention scheme conditions rather than treating them as one account.

5. What changed under the Labour Codes?

Name the four functional Codes, 29-law consolidation, commencement and current rules. Then explain one benefit and one implementation challenge.

6. How would you explain the 50% wages rule?

Describe defined remuneration, specified exclusions and add-back of excess. Avoid saying that basic salary must always equal half of CTC.

7. What does the 2026 EPFO wage-ceiling change mean?

Distinguish expanded mandatory coverage from contribution rates and separate benefit/pension ceilings. Use the effective date, 17 September 2026.

8. Should every gig worker be covered by EPF?

Discuss the scheme framework, employment-status facts, contribution design, portability and fiscal/administrative feasibility without claiming automatic universal EPF membership.

9. What is an Inspector-cum-Facilitator?

Explain lawful inspection and advisory functions together. Assistance does not authorise ignoring a statutory default.

10. How do you balance compliance with ease of doing business?

Use clear guidance, transparent procedure, proportionate lawful action, predictable timelines and protection of workers’ entitlements.

11. An employer has deducted PF but not deposited it. What will you do?

Verify records and jurisdiction, protect evidence, follow the statutory process, determine/recover dues through authorised powers and consider enforcement. Avoid promising an instant penalty without hearing.

12. A worker says a claim has been rejected repeatedly.

Acknowledge the problem, identify the precise deficiency and application history, arrange a clear written correction path and track disposal/escalation.

13. Your senior asks you to favour an establishment.

Seek a lawful, reasoned instruction, record material facts, apply the same standard and use the appropriate reporting/escalation channel where needed.

14. A union threatens disruption during an inspection.

Prioritise safety, communicate the legal purpose, document facts and seek appropriate support. Keep an open grievance channel while preserving the statutory process.

15. How would you increase coverage?

Map likely uncovered establishments, use lawful data matching and outreach, simplify genuine onboarding difficulties and measure sustained contribution compliance.

16. What data would you track in an office?

Ageing of claims/grievances, repeat rejection reasons, coverage, dues and recovery, data quality and worker-service outcomes, with proper access controls.

17. What is natural justice?

Explain fair hearing and absence of bias, followed by a reasoned decision based on the applicable law and evidence.

18. What if you do not know an answer?

Say what you know, identify the missing detail and avoid manufacturing a section, rate or recent notification.

19. Tell us about a mistake at work.

State the situation, your responsibility, corrective action and a specific process improvement. Protect confidential information.

20. What is the biggest challenge for EPFO?

Choose a defensible issue such as coverage, portability, data accuracy or timely service. Give a balanced problem–cause–action–measure answer.

A model situational answer

Scenario: a small employer says depositing arrears will close the business, while workers say their deductions have disappeared.

Answer structure: “I would verify the deduction and deposit records and establish the correct dues under the applicable law. I would explain the position to both sides, hear the employer and follow the prescribed determination and recovery procedure. Any instalment or settlement route would be considered only if legally available and approved by the competent authority. I would ensure workers receive clear information and keep a record of action and follow-up.”

The answer shows empathy and lawful procedure without promising an unauthorised waiver.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise long model answers?

Prepare structures and verified facts, then answer the actual question in your own words.

Can I claim an unknown policy detail confidently?

No. A precise admission of the missing detail is better than inventing a rate, section or current notification.
