Current Affairs 1 to 15 September 2026

One hundred exam points from the first fortnight of September. The centre of the period is the BRICS summit in New Delhi, the 7.8 percent GDP print, UPI pricing, defence production, and a short list of scheme anniversaries. Written for UPSC CSE, EPFO APFC, RBI Grade B, NABARD Grade A, DRDO SAO, BPSC, SEBI, PFRDA and CAPF.

This page covers 1–15 September 2026 only. It follows the 13–31 August catch-up. SEMICON India was inaugurated just after this window, on 17 September, so it is noted as a forward fact and not treated as a 1–15 event. Where a compilation gives the month but not the day, the line says so.

Figures to box before the 100 points

Economy, finance and payments — points 1 to 18

RBI Grade B ESI, SEBI, NABARD and EPFO should start here.

1

Quarterly GDP growth cited at 7.8 percent

From 1 September the 7.8 percent quarterly GDP print was the economic headline. The Prime Minister later said the figure had been achieved despite a difficult global setting. Treat 7.8 as the number; the quarter label should be checked on the NSO release before a date-precise mock.

2

Japanese agency upgrade after about 35 years

In the same September remarks, a Japanese credit-rating agency was said to have upgraded India’s sovereign rating after nearly three decades, around 35 years. A confidence fact for RBI ESI, not a substitute for the agency’s own note.

RBISEBI
3

Forex reserves at US$785.7 billion

RBI data reported on 11 September put foreign-exchange reserves at a record US$785.7 billion for the week ended 4 September, up by close to US$45 billion in that week. Memorise both the level and the week-ended date.

RBISEBIUPSC
4

CPI 4.82 percent, WPI 9.92 percent in August

August retail inflation was reported at 4.82 percent and wholesale inflation at 9.92 percent. RBI’s inflation target is the CPI, compiled by NSO; WPI is the wholesale series. The gap is itself a Prelims point.

RBIUPSC
5

No bank charge on UPI up to ₹2,000

The government line in mid-September was that bank charges would not apply on UPI payments up to ₹2,000. Small payments stay free. This is the consumer-facing half of the UPI story.

RBIEPFOSEBI
6

0.4 percent MDR above ₹2,000 from 15 October

On 15 September NPCI set a 0.4 percent merchant discount rate on person-to-merchant UPI above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300, effective 15 October 2026. Consumers and small vendors were reported exempt. A direct RBI and SEBI fact.

RBISEBI
7

Who runs UPI

UPI is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India. Pair this with the MDR cap. NPCI is not RBI, and that distinction is a standard banking-exam trap.

Why 1–15 September 2026 is a revision slot

This fortnight is one summit plus one macro print. BRICS gives GS2 its multilateral answer. The 7.8 percent GDP, the reserve level and the UPI rule give ESI its numbers. Defence production on 1 September gives DRDO SAO a dated fact. PMMSY at six years gives NABARD a scheme anniversary. That is the page.
