Manufacturing PMI eases to 54.7 in October; export orders at six-month high

The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, eased to 54.7 in October 2026 from 55.1 in September, according to survey data released on 2 November 2026. The final reading was slightly below the flash estimate of 54.9, but it remained well above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction and September's reading had marked the 60th consecutive month of expansion. New export orders rose at the fastest pace in six months, giving a lift to overall demand for Indian factory goods. Input cost inflation fell to its lowest level since February, while the rise in selling prices was the weakest in nearly four years. The PMI is a monthly survey-based indicator closely tracked by policymakers, including the Reserve Bank of India, as an early signal of business conditions.

24 years of X-ray data reveal black hole behind ultraluminous source ULX-8

Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and the Raman Research Institute, both autonomous institutes of the Department of Science and Technology, along with other institutions, have traced the behaviour of NGC 4490 ULX-8, one of the brightest X-ray sources in a nearby galaxy. They analysed observations made between 2000 and 2024 by the Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift X-ray telescopes. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) shine more brightly than the Eddington limit, the theoretical maximum brightness of an accreting object. The study found that ULX-8 stayed exceptionally luminous throughout, without the dramatic state changes typical of many black hole binaries, and is most likely powered by a stellar-mass black hole accreting matter at or near the Eddington limit. The results were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

International Day for Biosphere Reserves on 3 November

The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is observed every year on 3 November. Proclaimed by UNESCO, it highlights the role of biosphere reserves in conserving biodiversity while supporting sustainable development and local livelihoods. India has 18 notified biosphere reserves, of which 13 are part of UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, with the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, established in 1986, being the first. Biosphere reserves are part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, launched in 1971, and follow a three-zone model of core, buffer and transition areas. Unlike national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, which mainly protect wildlife and habitats, biosphere reserves also link conservation with the needs of surrounding communities. India is one of the world's 17 mega-biodiverse countries and accounts for about 7–8 per cent of recorded species on only 2.4 per cent of the Earth's land area.
