SEBI waives margins on subsequent trades backed by early pay-in of shares

The Securities and Exchange Board of India issued a circular on 22 October 2026 on the 'Margin Waiver on Subsequent Buy/Sell Transactions Post Early Pay-In (EPI) in Cash Segment'. Under it, clearing corporations will not collect margin from trading and clearing members on a client's subsequent positions, up to the value of the early pay-in of securities they have accepted. The facility applies when a client has a net sell obligation in a settlement and the EPI request for the securities sold has been accepted, and the available EPI value is the lower of the completed EPI value or the value of securities sold. If the client reverses the sale, the EPI benefit is removed and any shortfall is blocked from the broker's proprietary collateral. The rupee fell 44 paise to close at a provisional 94.82 against the US dollar on 22 October 2026, after gaining 53 paise in the previous session.
