Finance Ministry's nowcast puts Q2 FY27 GDP growth at 7.35 per cent

The Ministry of Finance's monthly economic report, released on 29 October 2026, estimated through its nowcasting model that India's economy grew by 7.35 per cent in the second quarter (July–September) of FY 2026-27. The report linked this outlook to stronger industrial output, energy consumption, port traffic, GST collections and automobile sales. It noted that the IMF has raised its FY27 growth forecast for India to 7 per cent, up from 6.4 per cent in July, while the World Bank, the OECD and the Reserve Bank of India project 7.1 per cent. Supply-side steps such as onion releases through the ‘Kanda Express’, stock limits on sugar dealers and lower customs duty on crude edible oils were expected to ease food prices, although El Niño conditions and high crude oil prices remain risks. The report added that foreign exchange reserves provide import cover of about 10.3 months.

Chief Economic Adviser calls for import substitution, resilience and export strength together

Chief Economic Adviser Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran said on 29 October 2026 that the present economic situation ‘resembles’ 1991 in that it marks an inflection point for India, while stressing that it is not identical to the balance of payments crisis of that year. Speaking at a think-tank event in New Delhi, he said India now needs to pursue import substitution, strategic resilience and strategic indispensability at the same time. He listed crude oil, industrial metals, fertilisers, active pharmaceutical ingredients, rare earths, critical minerals and battery chemicals as imported inputs where dependence should be reduced, along with building strategic buffers. He also suggested treating energy as a macroeconomic policy issue and directing fiscal support to lower input costs, especially for small and medium enterprises. Support to industry, he said, should be linked to performance.

He said the nine free trade and bilateral trade agreements concluded by the Government give preferential access to economies with an aggregate GDP of about USD 60 trillion, compared with USD 10 trillion covered by agreements signed before 2014. He added that India's space economy, valued at USD 8.4 billion, has the potential to reach USD 44 billion by 2033. He said innovation must emerge from collaboration among the government, the private sector and academia.

The Fed also kept the interest rate on reserve balances at 3.90 per cent from 29 October. Decisions of the US central bank are closely watched in India because they influence the dollar, capital flows and bond yields in emerging markets.
