Star cluster UBC 63 found to be two clusters after a close flyby

A team led by Indian astronomers from Gauhati University and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, has found that the star cluster UBC 63, about 4,892 light years away, is actually made up of two distinct clusters, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on 5 November 2026. Using data from the European Space Agency's Gaia mission along with machine learning techniques and dynamical simulations, the researchers identified UBC 63A, about 21 million years old, and UBC 63B, about 562 million years old. The large difference in age shows that the two did not form as a single cluster. Simulations suggest that the clusters came within about 7 parsecs, or roughly 23 light years, of each other around 6 million years ago and are now about 26 parsecs apart and moving away, since they are not gravitationally bound. The study, published in the Astronomical Journal, offers a rare view of the aftermath of an encounter between star clusters in the Milky Way.
