UPSC ORA Recruitment Test 75:25 Weightage: Merit Formula, Cut-off and Score Calculator
UPSC Online Recruitment Application (ORA) recruitment is vacancy-specific. Where a UPSC Recruitment Test notice prescribes 75:25 weighting, the Recruitment Test contributes 75% and interview 25% to the combined selection score. This is not a universal ORA rule: screening, qualifying conditions, shortlisting and final merit depend on the particular recruitment notice.

What does 75:25 actually mean?
| Component | Normalized contribution | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Recruitment Test (RT) | RT percentage × 0.75 | Not simply raw marks plus 75. |
| Interview | Interview percentage × 0.25 | Not always a fixed raw 25-mark interview. |
| Illustrative combined score | RT % × 0.75 + Interview % × 0.25 | Not the same as official category-wise cut-off. |
Example: 180/300 in the RT means 60%. A hypothetical interview result of 70/100 means 70%. Combined weighted result = 0.75×60 + 0.25×70 = 62.5 out of 100. Apply this only where the notice uses that exact relative-weight formula and scale.

Shortlisting cut-off, suitability and final merit are different
| Term | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Is a candidate qualified to be considered? |
| Screening/shortlisting | Who is called for RT/interview when applications are numerous? |
| RT cut-off | Who advances from the test stage? |
| Interview suitability | Has the candidate met the prescribed minimum interview standard? |
| Final merit | How do eligible, suitable candidates rank according to the notified scheme? |
Some UPSC recruitment-test notices specify interview standards such as 50 for General/EWS, 45 for OBC and 40 for SC/ST/PwBD on a 100-point basis. These figures are notice-dependent: never mechanically apply them to every ORA recruitment.
Three worked selection scenarios
| Candidate | RT percentage | Interview percentage | 75:25 composite |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 80 | 48 | 72.00 |
| B | 72 | 75 | 72.75 |
| C | 68 | 90 | 73.50 |
Under the illustrative formula candidate C leads despite the lower RT percentage. But if a separate minimum interview suitability requirement excludes a candidate, a high weighted total alone cannot make the candidate selectable. Tie-breaks, reservations and document verification also follow the applicable UPSC instructions.
Practical workflow: download your advertisement, RT notice, result and interview notice; note whether scores are standardized; compute the composite only after reading the disclosed formula.
