(Introduction)

Kharavela (खरावेल) was one of the greatest rulers of ancient Kalinga (modern Odisha) belonging to the Mahameghavahana dynasty. He ruled in the 2nd century BCE and played a pivotal role in reviving the glory of Kalinga after the devastating Kalinga War led by Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire.

He is best remembered for the Hathigumpha Inscription — a remarkable 17-line record carved on the Udayagiri hills near Bhubaneswar. This inscription provides year-by-year details of his reign, military campaigns, public welfare works, and religious patronage.
