Aditya-L1's VELC shows solar eruption expanded asymmetrically

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, have used data from the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) on board Aditya-L1 to show that a coronal mass ejection (CME) expanded unevenly instead of like a simple symmetric bubble. Aditya-L1, India's first space-based solar observatory, was launched in September 2023 and operates from the Sun–Earth L1 point with seven payloads, of which VELC is the primary one. By combining VELC spectroscopy of the 530.3 nm green coronal line with images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and a three-dimensional model, the team reconstructed the CME's geometry and motion. The asymmetric expansion matters because it can change a CME's speed as it travels towards Earth, affecting space weather that can disturb satellites and communication networks. The study has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Exhibitions on Piprahwa relics draw devotees at Tawang Monastery

Large numbers of devotees have visited Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, during the first three days of the exposition of the holy relics of Shakyamuni Buddha, the Ministry of Culture said on 3 November 2026. Alongside the relics, two exhibitions are on display: 'Unearthing the Sacred Piprahwa', presented by the International Buddhist Confederation, which traces the discovery of the relics in 1898, and 'Crossroads of Dhamma', curated by the National Museum, New Delhi. The relics, brought from the National Museum, were received at the monastery by Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri Pema Khandu in the presence of Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The exposition continues at Tawang until 7 November and will then move to the TGL Monastery in Bomdila from 8 to 13 November and the Golden Pagoda in Namsai from 14 to 20 November. The relics are scheduled to return to New Delhi on 21 November 2026.
