More than geography — they shaped civilization, wars, and the very identity of Bharat.
HISTORIC EVENT
Battle of the Ten Kings
(Daśarājña Yuddha)
Fought on the banks of the Paruṣṇī (Ravi) river.
King Sudas of the Bharata tribe defeated a confederation of 10 kings.
This victory is celebrated in the Rigveda (Mandala 7) and marked the consolidation of Vedic culture in the Punjab region.

Common Trap in UPSC
Students often confuse Vitasta with Chenab and Asikni with Jhelum because both pairs are swapped in the question. Remember: V = J (Vitasta = Jhelum) and A = C (Asikni = Chenab).
Pro Tip: Use alphabetical logic — Asikni starts with A, Chenab with C? Wait, better mnemonic: “Vitasta flows into Jhelum valley”
Linguistic Legacy
Many modern names are corrupted versions of Greek transcriptions by Alexander’s historians (Hydaspes, Acesines, Hydraotes, Hyphasis).
Modern Relevance
These rivers are critical for the Indus Water Treaty (1960) between India and Pakistan. Jhelum, Chenab & Ravi are “Western Rivers”.
Origin
All five rivers of Punjab originate in the Himalayas. Beas originates from Beas Kund near Rohtang Pass. Sutlej from Rakshastal (near Mansarovar).
