A practical framework for RBI descriptive English, ESI and FM: essay outlines, a solved precis, model answers and a four-week writing plan.

Prepare English and subject answers together

RBI descriptive preparation has two related tasks: communicating clearly in English and explaining ESI/FM concepts accurately. Practise typing, planning and editing throughout preparation. Good ideas lose value when the answer misses the question or runs out of time.

Notice and date check. This is a preparation framework for the General cadre. Use the current official notice, information handout and on-screen instructions for question choice, marks, time and word limits. A coaching word-count convention is not an official rule.

A common method for every writing task

  1. Read the command word: explain, discuss, analyse, evaluate or compare. Underline the actual subject and any qualifier.
  2. Write a one-sentence answer before drafting the introduction. If you cannot do that, clarify the concept first.
  3. Plan a short sequence of points. Give each paragraph a purpose and avoid repeating the introduction.
  4. Use examples that prove the point. Keep data dated and sourced; do not invent a figure to make an answer look researched.
  5. Reserve editing time for relevance, missing words, agreement, punctuation and accidental contradictions.

Use a simple practice allocation of about 10% planning, 80% drafting and 10% checking. Adjust after timed mocks. These are training proportions; the examination clock and task instructions take priority.

Essay framework with a worked outline

PartPurposeExample: digital finance and inclusion
OpeningDefine the issue and state a balanced positionDigital finance can reduce access costs, but its value depends on safe, useful adoption.
Paragraph 1Explain the opportunityFaster payments, easier transfers and more convenient service delivery.
Paragraph 2Explain productive useSuitable credit, savings and insurance can support enterprise and resilience.
Paragraph 3Examine the constraintsConnectivity, language, disability access, fraud and unsuitable product sales.
Paragraph 4Offer practical improvementsAccessible design, assisted channels, literacy, consent and effective redress.
ConclusionState the desired outcomeMeasure inclusion through useful, safe participation rather than adoption counts alone.

A strong introduction moves quickly to the question. Avoid a long history of civilisation, a doubtful quotation or an unrelated story. Use connected paragraphs; an essay should develop an argument, even when you use a brief outline during planning.

Sample opening and closing

Opening: Digital finance changes how households save, pay and obtain credit. It can bring formal services closer to people who face distance, time and documentation barriers. Yet a digital transaction is only one step towards inclusion. Its broader contribution depends on reliability, suitability and the user’s ability to resolve problems.

Closing: The next stage of inclusion should combine convenient digital services with trusted assistance and effective consumer protection. When users can understand products, control their data and recover from mistakes or fraud, digital access is more likely to translate into lasting financial resilience.

Precis writing: method and solved example

  1. Read once for the central argument, then again for the sequence of supporting ideas.
  2. Mark the essential propositions; remove illustrations, repeated phrases and decorative wording.
  3. Write in your own words while preserving the author’s meaning, balance and relationships.
  4. Follow the stated length and title requirement. Do not add your opinion or a fact absent from the passage.
  5. Compare the draft with the original to ensure that no qualification has disappeared.

Original practice passage — 120 words:

A bank account can connect a household to formal finance, but opening the account does not complete financial inclusion. The customer must be able to deposit, withdraw, save and pay without unreasonable cost or difficulty. Services also need to match the household’s circumstances. A loan that is easy to obtain but impossible to repay can increase vulnerability. Digital channels reduce distance and waiting time, yet they may exclude people who lack connectivity, confidence or accessible devices. Assisted service points, clear information and effective complaint handling therefore remain important. Policymakers should measure regular use, product suitability and customer outcomes alongside account ownership. Inclusion succeeds when people can use financial services safely to manage their everyday needs and withstand shocks in life.

Model precis — 40 words; title: “Useful and Safe Financial Inclusion”

Financial inclusion requires usable, affordable and suitable services beyond account ownership. Digital access helps but can exclude some users. Assistance, clear information and complaint resolution are essential. Success should be assessed through regular use, customer outcomes and resilience to shocks.

Why it works: the precis preserves the main argument, the digital-access qualification and the measurement conclusion. It omits examples and adds no policy claim. The 120/40 ratio is an exercise setting, not a universal rule for every exam.

Comprehension and business communication

TaskApproachAvoid
Direct comprehensionLocate the relevant passage, then answer in the required form.Importing an outside fact that contradicts the passage.
InferenceChoose what follows from the text, with its qualifications intact.Turning “may” into “always”.
Vocabulary in contextTest the meaning within the sentence.Choosing a familiar dictionary meaning that does not fit.
SummaryCapture the central claim and essential support.Copying disconnected sentences.
Formal correspondence, if prescribedState purpose, necessary facts, requested action and a suitable closing.Unnecessary emotion, vague requests or unsupported accusations.

Practise correspondence where it appears in the relevant syllabus, such as IRDAI. Do not assume that every regulator asks the same English task.

ESI and FM answer structure

Use a short opening, a logically ordered body and a direct conclusion. The depth should follow the marks, command word and word limit. A comparison can use clear paired dimensions; an evaluation should weigh benefits against limitations before reaching a view.

CommandWhat the answer must doUseful body structure
ExplainShow how or why something worksConcept → mechanism → example
DiscussConsider relevant dimensionsBenefits → concerns → practical response
AnalyseBreak the issue into linked componentsCauses → channels → consequences
EvaluateReach a supported judgementCriteria → evidence on both sides → judgement
CompareUse the same dimensions for both itemsPurpose → mechanism → application → limitations
Model answer: apply Herzberg to a customer-service team

A team has acceptable pay and facilities but reports monotonous work and no recognition. Explain a suitable managerial response.

Suggested approach: Herzberg’s two-factor theory distinguishes conditions that prevent dissatisfaction from aspects of the job that create satisfaction. Acceptable pay and facilities may address hygiene needs, while routine work and absent recognition leave motivators weak. The manager could recognise accurate, helpful service, provide learning opportunities and delegate appropriate responsibility for resolving customer problems. These steps should be paired with clear controls and fair appraisal. The response must also check workload and employee feedback: a theory guides diagnosis but does not prove that every problem has the same cause. Success should be reviewed through staff feedback, service quality and complaints, rather than sales figures alone.

Four-week writing practice plan

WeekPracticeReview focus
1Three essay outlines, two precis exercises and four short subject answersRelevance and paragraph structure
2Two timed essays, two comprehension sets and four subject answersEvidence, explanation and completion
3Two mixed English sessions and two subject-paper simulationsTask choice and time allocation
4Simulate the official paper format; repair repeated weaknessesConcise drafting, editing and calm execution

Maintain an error log with the exact sentence, the problem and a corrected version. Useful categories are unsupported claim, missing explanation, repetition, grammar, spelling, word-limit error and incomplete task. Rewrite a weak paragraph once; copying a full model answer repeatedly provides little feedback.

Self-review rubric and practice prompts

Use this 20-point training rubric: relevance 4, conceptual accuracy 4, logical development 4, evidence/examples 3, language 3 and task completion 2. It is a self-review tool, not RBI’s marking scheme.

  • Essay: Does digital financial access automatically produce financial inclusion?
  • Essay: Climate resilience and the quality of economic growth.
  • ESI: Explain why economic growth may coexist with insecure employment.
  • ESI: Evaluate the role of public health spending in inclusive development.
  • FM: Compare transactional and transformational leadership in a regulated institution.
  • FM: Explain monetary transmission and two reasons for a delayed response.
  • Precis: Reduce an official explanatory passage to the length specified in your exercise without changing its argument.

Before submitting a mock, check: Have I answered every part? Are the facts internally consistent? Is each paragraph useful? Did I follow the actual word limit? Have I left a fragment or unfinished sentence?

Frequently asked questions

Should I use difficult vocabulary?

Use precise, familiar words. A clear explanation is more valuable than a sentence made harder by unnecessary vocabulary.

Must a precis always be one-third of the original?

Follow the task’s instructions. The solved exercise uses one-third; the examination may specify its own limit.

Can I memorise a model essay?

Memorise structures and reliable examples. Adapt the argument to the actual prompt instead of forcing a prepared essay into a different question.
