Can this exam be cracked in 30 days? Yes, a disciplined candidate can make substantial progress, especially with some prior preparation; however, thirty days cannot guarantee selection or replace a strong foundation. The plan prioritises active recall, targeted practice and repeated feedback over marathon reading.
The rule that changes the outcome
Every day must produce three things: (1) revised concepts, (2) timed questions, (3) an error log. Reading alone is not counted as completed preparation. UPSC announces the syllabus, not a guaranteed share of questions for any subject.

How many candidates are competing?
An EduTap video screenshot shared with CrackTarget reports 3,65,865 applications for APFC 2026 and attributes the number to an RTI response. CrackTarget has not independently reviewed the original RTI reply, so this is reported information, not an independently verified UPSC statistical release.
If the figure is accurate, it represents approximately 4,573 applications per advertised vacancy (3,65,865 ÷ 80). Exam attendance and the interview shortlist are not yet known. This ratio should motivate better preparation, not speculative cut-off predictions.
The nine subjects: a practical priority matrix
The syllabus headings are UPSC’s. The order below is CrackTarget’s 30-day study recommendation; it is not an official distribution of questions or marks.
| Official syllabus area | Sprint treatment | Where to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial relations, Labour Codes & Social Security | Core daily focus in Week 1; revisit in final 72 hours. | Labour Codes comparison |
| Principles of Accountancy, Auditing & Insurance | Structured conceptual + numerical practice in Week 2. | 120 commerce MCQs |
| Developmental issues & Indian economy | Two focused days plus current-event integration. | Official syllabus map |
| Governance & Constitution | Two days; institution and Article-based recall. | Polity notes |
| Elementary maths, statistics & mental ability | Short daily drilling, concentrated Days 22–24. | Timed mock tests |
| General English | 20 minutes daily and Day 25 error-repair sprint. | Mixed-language test practice |
| Culture, heritage & freedom movements | Focus on timeline, movements and high-frequency concepts. | Study materials |
| General science & basic computer applications | One compact first pass and later mixed MCQs. | Syllabus-linked resources |
| Current events | 15–30 minutes daily; prioritise verified dates and official releases. | Daily current affairs |
Two schedules that actually fit daily life
Choose the schedule you can sustain. A 3-hour weekday executed consistently is more valuable than an unrealistic 8-hour target that collapses by Day 4. On mock days, replace study blocks with a full test and review.
Working aspirant
3 hours per day
- 70 min — primary subject and active recall
- 45 min — second subject or numerical drills
- 30 min — timed practice (20–30 questions)
- 20 min — answer review and error notebook
- 15 min — verified current affairs
Full-time aspirant
6 hours per day
- 140 min — primary subject
- 100 min — secondary subject and examples
- 70 min — timed practice (40–60 questions)
- 30 min — review and error log
- 20 min — current affairs and rapid recall
Weekly target: one 2-hour complete test plus at least 60–90 minutes of analysis. If you miss a day, keep your next mock date unchanged and combine only the low-priority tasks.
Your 30-day preparation calendar
Flexible start: Day 1 means your next study day. If you want the entire programme to end just before the scheduled 20 December test, use 20 November–19 December 2026 for Days 1–30. Start sooner if possible; use the remaining time for spaced revision. Each day includes a measurable deliverable.

How to approach each day’s study session
01 / Retrieval
Close the source for 5 minutes. Write what you remember about the definitions, exceptions, steps or formulas. Then correct omissions.
02 / Timed practice
Attempt questions without switching tabs or peeking at solutions. Record correct, wrong and skipped, not just a percentage.
03 / Repair
Group mistakes as concept gap, factual recall, calculation error, time pressure or guess. Retest the weak concept in 48–72 hours.
Five-mock improvement system
Mocks are diagnostic instruments. Do not collect scores without tracing each mistake to an exact subtopic. Use five full-length attempts during this sprint, with lighter targeted sets on the other days.
| Mock | Day | Primary question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | 1 | Where do marks leak: knowledge, accuracy or speed? |
| Checkpoint 1 | 7 | Can I recall Labour Codes and EPFO schemes under time pressure? |
| Checkpoint 2 | 14 | Did accountancy/audit/insurance improve enough to raise the total? |
| Checkpoint 3 | 21 | Am I competent across the complete nine-topic syllabus? |
| Checkpoint 4 | 26 | Are my test strategy, recall and time management stable? |
Mock-score calculator: know the penalty
For a practice mock of 120 equal-mark questions carrying 300 marks, each correct answer earns 2.5 marks and each wrong answer loses approximately 0.833 marks under the one-third negative-marking rule.
Practice score = (2.5 × correct) − [(2.5 ÷ 3) × wrong]. Example: 90 correct + 15 wrong + 15 skipped = 225 − 12.5 = 212.5/300. This is an illustrative mock calculation, not a claim that UPSC has guaranteed exactly 120 questions in 2026.
An unanswered question does not attract a negative mark. Follow the actual official marking instructions for the examination.

Accuracy: 85.7% · Negative marks: 12.50
A better method for deciding whether to attempt
- First pass: Solve direct questions and numericals you can complete confidently without getting stuck.
- Second pass: Revisit questions where you can meaningfully eliminate options or work out the answer.
- Last pass: Use evidence rather than blind guessing; under negative marking, the accuracy of your additional attempts matters.
- After the test: Rework the same wrong questions without notes, then link them to the correct source.

Important 2026 topics to revise with primary sources
Labour Codes and social security: what must be memorised?
- Definitions of employee, worker, wages, establishment and appropriate government; distinguish each Code.
- Coverage thresholds, responsible authorities, contributions, claims, penalties, inspections and exemptions.
- EPF, EPS, EDLI and ESI: scheme-level institutional differences; link benefits to beneficiaries.
- Rules, commencement dates, notifications and transitional provisions: check current official text rather than relying on older coaching charts.
Accountancy: what should a non-commerce student do first?
- Start with the accounting equation and debit/credit rules, not advanced balance-sheet ratios.
- Practise journal → ledger → trial balance → final accounts with small examples.
- Separate capital/revenue, cash/profit, provision/reserve and fund-flow/cash-flow.
- Learn audit evidence, vouching, verification, materiality, internal control and audit-report basics before memorising isolated terms.
Current affairs: what is worth 20 minutes daily?
- Government notifications and major national developments, recorded with exact date and source.
- Employment and social security, EPFO, labour reforms, budget, economic policies and flagship welfare schemes.
- Important international institutions, science/technology and recent appointments when relevant.
- Keep a two-page running dated log; do not depend only on monthly capsule PDFs.

Questions candidates ask
Is 30 days enough to clear UPSC EPFO APFC 2026?
It can be enough for a strong, focused final sprint if you already know part of the syllabus. A beginner should treat it as an intensive first cycle, not a guarantee. Quality of recall, mocks, and corrected errors matters more than nominal hours.
Is APFC 2026 the same as EO/AO 2026?
No. The 2026 Special Advertisement No. 52/2026 concerns APFC vacancies. Do not import EO/AO vacancy or selection figures from the separate 2025 recruitment cycle.
Should I study Labour Codes or older labour Acts?
Study the four Labour Codes and current operative legal framework first, then learn the older Acts for context and transition where relevant. Commencement, rules and notified provisions should be checked from official government sources.
How many mock tests should I attempt in 30 days?
Start with five fully analysed complete tests plus short timed subject sets. More tests are useful only if you review and eliminate recurring errors; attempting a new mock every day can conceal weaknesses rather than solve them.
Which subject will have the most questions in APFC 2026?
UPSC publishes the broad syllabus but does not guarantee a subject-wise share of marks. Labour/social security and commerce receive priority here because they are specialised and often difficult for general-studies-only candidates—not because any official quota has been announced.
What if I work full-time and have only 2–3 hours per day?
Use the 3-hour schedule, do not skip the daily 20–30 timed questions, and put full-length tests on weekly days off. If time falls to 2 hours, protect your primary topic, practice and error-review blocks; reduce secondary reading first.
When should I stop adding new study material?
After the final full mock, shift to correcting your own mistakes, rapid tables, formula sheets and official current updates. The last day before the examination should not be spent beginning an unfamiliar textbook.
