2026 notice and immediate preparation priorities
Notice and date check. The verified PFRDA 2026 notice lists four streams: General, Research, Actuary and Official Language (Rajbhasha). Phase I was scheduled for 15 October 2026 and Phase II for 20 November 2026. Check the call letter and careers page for any revision.
As of 23 October, the published Phase II date is four weeks away. Use this guide to align preparation with your stream and the current annexure. Older stream lists or generic regulator booklists can miss important changes.
Paper pattern and selection rules
| Stage / paper | Format | Marks / time | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase I Paper 1 | 90 common aptitude/awareness questions | 100 / 60 minutes | Screening |
| Phase I Paper 2 | 50 stream questions | 100 / 40 minutes | Screening |
| Phase II Paper 1 | English descriptive: three questions | 100 / 60 minutes | One-third weight |
| Phase II Paper 2 | 50 stream MCQs | 100 / 40 minutes | Two-thirds weight |
| Final selection | Phase II and interview | 85% : 15% | Merit subject to notice rules |
Objective papers carry one-fourth negative marking. The Authority sets qualifying cut-offs. Phase II English is evaluated only for candidates meeting the Paper 2 qualifying condition; both paper and aggregate rules matter. Phase I scores do not contribute to final selection.
Four streams: syllabus-led preparation map
| Stream | Official focus, compressed | Best preparation output |
|---|---|---|
| General | Commerce/accountancy, management, finance, costing, Companies Act, economics, pensions, AI, media, marketing and communication; PFRDA Act and Budget/Survey | A coverage checklist with calculations, legal recall and concept cases |
| Research | Probability, statistics, inference, sampling/testing, economic statistics, time series, operations research, quality control and computing | Formula sheet plus mixed numerical sets |
| Actuary | Insurance and Management in the notified annexure | Insurance distinctions, operations and management case cards |
| Official Language | Rajbhasha policy and two-way translation, including pension/legal/financial terminology | A terminology register and contextual translation practice |
Use the exact annexure for scope. In particular, the Research stream needs serious statistics preparation, while the Actuary stream’s stated paper is Insurance and Management. Select material by the syllabus rather than the stream name alone.
General stream: organise the broad syllabus
Use four revision baskets. This is a planning device: no official topic-wise marks are implied.
| Basket | What to do | Example task |
|---|---|---|
| Calculations | Accountancy, costing, economics and basic finance problems | Solve a cash-flow classification, a break-even question and a time-value problem. |
| Institutions and law | PFRDA framework, pension architecture and prescribed company-law areas | Make authority–function–condition–exception cards. |
| People and communication | Management, leadership, marketing and communication | Apply a theory to a branch/service problem. |
| Newer digital/media areas | AI/ML concepts, model evaluation, responsible AI and media concepts | Explain overfitting, data bias and the digital divide in plain language. |
Do not leave the digital/media basket for the final night. A small daily slot can cover definitions, examples and distinctions without displacing the core numerical subjects.
Newer topics: small examples that clarify the ideas
| Concept | Working explanation | Practice check |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised vs unsupervised learning | Learning from labelled examples versus finding structure without the same labelled target | Would classifying labelled complaints differ from grouping similar complaints? |
| Overfitting | A model fits training details too closely and performs poorly on new data | Why is strong training accuracy alone insufficient? |
| Cross-validation | Repeated train/validation splits help assess model performance | Keep the final test evaluation separate from routine tuning. |
| Responsible AI | Consider fairness, privacy, accountability and appropriate human oversight | Could a biased input history disadvantage a group of pension subscribers? |
| Media convergence | Content and services combine across platforms/channels | Check consistent communication across an app, branch and website. |
| Financial literacy | Help people understand and use financial services appropriately | Explain costs, risk and choices in language the audience can use. |
Research, Actuary and Rajbhasha practice methods
Research
Organise each statistical method by assumptions, estimator/test statistic, interpretation and common failure. Solve without the formula sheet, then explain the result in one sentence. Rotate probability, distributions, inference and time series; add operations research and quality control rather than repeatedly polishing only elementary statistics.
Actuary
Make comparisons such as underwriting versus claims, insurance versus reinsurance, indemnity versus fixed-benefit cover, and leadership versus supervision. Link pension/annuity concepts with longevity and affordability. Use the stated Insurance and Management syllabus to decide depth; do not replace it with an unrelated professional actuarial exam curriculum.
Official Language
Maintain a bilingual register with the term, context and an example sentence. Translate complete passages in both directions, then check fidelity, register and consistency. Legal and financial terms need contextual accuracy; a familiar everyday synonym can change the meaning. Continue the common English descriptive preparation.
28-day Phase II plan
| Days | Work | Required output |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Audit the annexure and diagnose weak units | One complete checklist; two timed Paper 2 sets |
| 5–8 | Repair the weakest high-coverage subjects | Short concept cards and reattempted errors |
| 9–12 | Complete neglected units and newer topics | No unexplained blank unit on the checklist |
| 13–16 | Mixed subject practice and English | Two full Paper 2 sets; essay, precis and comprehension practice |
| 17–20 | Simulate both paper formats | Two complete simulations; detailed review |
| 21–24 | Second revision and difficult questions | Reattempt the error notebook without notes |
| 25–27 | Final simulations and compact recall | Stable attempt strategy and two-page revision sheets |
| 28 | Light recall and logistics | Call-letter instructions, travel and normal rest |
On a three-hour day, a practical split is 110 minutes for stream work, 45 for English and 25 for recall/error review. Shift more time towards a demonstrably weak paper while keeping both active.
Scoring and attempt discipline
Weighted Phase II arithmetic
English score is 66/100 and stream score is 72/100. Find the weighted score.
Suggested approach: 66 × 1/3 + 72 × 2/3 = 22 + 48 = 70/100. This arithmetic does not establish that a qualifying cut-off or interview-shortlisting threshold has been met.
For 50 equally weighted questions carrying 100 marks, a correct answer earns 2 marks and a wrong answer loses 0.5 mark under one-fourth negative marking. With 35 correct, 8 wrong and 7 unattempted, the net is 70 − 4 = 66. Review low-confidence guesses separately from concept errors.
Practice questions with explanations
Attempt each question before opening the answer. These are CrackTarget practice questions.
Q1. Which is the verified 2026 stream list?
- A. General, IT, Legal and Finance only
- B. General, Research, Actuary and Official Language
- C. Only General
- D. Only Research and IT
Answer and explanation
B. The 2026 notice lists those four streams. Do not transplant an older recruitment list.
Q2. Which preparation is most directly relevant to the Research syllabus?
- A. Only motivational quotations
- B. Statistical inference and time-series practice
- C. Only company-law section numbers
- D. Only translation
Answer and explanation
B. The notified Research syllabus is strongly statistical.
Q3. A model performs extremely well on training data but poorly on new data. This suggests:
- A. Overfitting
- B. Guaranteed fairness
- C. No need for validation
- D. A higher pension guarantee
Answer and explanation
A. Overfitting is a failure to generalise beyond training details.
Q4. Why should English remain in the revision plan?
- A. It has no merit role
- B. It has one-third Phase II weight, subject to evaluation/qualifying rules
- C. It replaces the stream paper
- D. It removes all negative marking
Answer and explanation
B. English contributes to Phase II merit; Paper 2 qualification and other rules still apply.
Q5. At two marks per correct answer and a half-mark penalty, 30 correct and 10 wrong score:
- A. 40
- B. 50
- C. 55
- D. 60
Answer and explanation
C. 30 × 2 − 10 × 0.5 = 55.
Frequently asked questions
Can I follow a 2025 stream guide unchanged?
No. Reconcile streams, subjects and format with the 2026 notice.
Is the Actuary specialist paper only advanced actuarial mathematics?
The 2026 annexure labels the specialist syllabus Insurance and Management. Read that annexure before choosing material.
Are qualifying cut-offs guaranteed in advance here?
No. The Authority decides the relevant cut-offs; a model score is not a prediction.
