CRACKTARGET · UPSC SPECIALISED RECRUITMENT · GUIDE 07 / 10

ESIC Deputy Director, EPFO APFC and DRDO SAO belong to different organisational settings. Compare the nature of administration, statutory exposure, posting possibilities and syllabus before choosing. Read job profiles as a range of assignments

A recruitment advertisement usually provides only a concise duty description. Actual work can differ across regional offices, headquarters, branches and institutions. An officer may move between functions over a career.

For comparison, ask what documents the officer regularly handles, who relies on the decisions and how much of the role involves public dealing, establishment matters, financial scrutiny or statutory enforcement. These questions are more useful than a blanket ranking of prestige.

Pay comparison: use the notification

These posts have been associated with Group A administrative recruitment and Level 10 structures in relevant recruitment cycles. Verify the exact post, grade and current advertisement before relying on a pay label. Level 10 under the seventh CPC pay matrix begins at ₹56,100 basic pay.

Basic pay is not in-hand salary. Dearness allowance, admissible housing and transport components, posting, deductions and accommodation arrangements change the final amount. Do not compare a gross figure for one role with a net figure for another.

Promotion and career progression

Build a verified ladder from the organisation’s recruitment rules. Record the feeder grade, qualifying service, method of appointment and vacancy position. Minimum eligibility service does not guarantee promotion on that date.

For career planning, distinguish regular promotion, financial progression and deputation opportunities. A chart promising a fixed number of years to a senior post ignores vacancy, seniority, departmental promotion and rule changes.

An integrated preparation route

Start with the official syllabus of the exam you will take first. Mark topics as common, partially common and exclusive. Build shared notes for English, accounts and administration only where the syllabus supports the overlap.

Use a weekly schedule with three shared-subject sessions, two primary-exam sessions, one secondary-exam session and one mixed mock review. Adjust the ratio when an RT date is announced; do not dilute the nearest exam to maintain an artificial equal split.

How to choose as a working candidate

Prefer EPFO if you are drawn to labour and social-security administration and are comfortable with the possible public or employer interface. Prefer the ESIC setting if insurance administration and its organisational functions interest you. Prefer DRDO administration if establishment and institutional administration fit your strengths.

These are fit questions, not assurances about workload. Ask about the actual office, sanctioned staffing, reporting arrangements and assignment before drawing conclusions about working hours or transfer frequency.

Decision worksheet

Score each role from 1 to 5 for subject interest, location flexibility, comfort with public dealing, administrative strengths and current eligibility. Add a short reason beside every score. Keep unverified promotion or salary claims outside the scoring.

A useful final check is whether you would still prefer the role if the first posting or first promotion took longer than expected. This exposes choices driven only by optimistic assumptions.
