A sensible subject map
| Study area | What to produce |
|---|---|
| Constitution and labour | Article-to-principle revision sheet |
| Industrial relations | Definitions, institutions and dispute-resolution chart |
| Wages and conditions | Coverage, obligations and calculation examples |
| Social security | Benefit, contribution and institution comparison |
| Labour welfare / economics | Concepts linked to workplace examples |
| Current developments | Dated official amendment and policy register |
Anchor the plan in the official notice
The 2023 UPSC JTS/ALC-related RT notice is a useful historical reference. It expressly covers constitutional provisions relating to labour and provides an RT scheme. It should not be treated as a substitute for a later ALC or LEO notification.
Before buying material, copy the exact syllabus of your vacancy into a tracker. Mark each topic as not started, first reading complete, practised and revised. Separate ALC and LEO columns wherever their notified coverage differs.
Learn the constitutional framework first
Connect equality, freedom of association and protection against exploitation with the labour setting. Study Directive Principles on livelihood, humane working conditions, maternity relief and workers’ participation. Distinguish enforceable Fundamental Rights from Directive Principles.
Use a two-column exercise: constitutional principle on one side and a workplace problem on the other. Ask whether the question concerns a right, legislative competence, a welfare objective or a statutory mechanism.
Read labour statutes through a common template
For each Act or Code, record scope, definitions, coverage, responsible authority, employer obligations, worker entitlement, procedure, remedy and penalties. This template reveals similarities without erasing differences between laws.
Maintain a transition column for old legislation, new Code provision and commencement or rules status. Legal position can depend on the date and jurisdiction in the question. Do not answer an older paper using a later amendment without explaining the change.
A practical booklist by purpose
| Resource | Purpose | How to use |
|---|---|---|
| Official UPSC notification | Binding syllabus and scheme | Keep as the first page of the tracker |
| India Code / ministry text | Statutory language | Read definitions and operative provisions |
| A standard labour-law text | Conceptual explanation | Match chapters to the syllabus |
| Introductory labour economics material | Employment, wages and labour-market concepts | Make short applied notes |
| CrackTarget EPFO and labour resources | Revision and practice | Verify dated facts against the official text |
| Official question papers | Authentic question practice | Record exam, year and question number |
Eight-week preparation plan
Weeks 1–2: constitutional framework, syllabus mapping and first statutory blocks. Weeks 3–4: industrial relations, wages and working-condition topics. Weeks 5–6: social security, welfare and labour economics where notified. Week 7: timed papers and weak areas. Week 8: compact revision and amendment review.
For a working candidate, use one focused reading session and one short question-review session on weekdays. Reserve a longer weekend session for a mixed paper and its error analysis. Reduce the number of resources before reducing revision time.
How to analyse ten years of papers honestly
A ten-year analysis requires a defined paper set. List the actual exams held, source links, paper versions and question counts. Tag each question once under a primary topic, record ambiguous cases separately and calculate percentages only from the stated denominator.
This page provides the analysis method, not a fabricated ten-year frequency table. If papers were not held in every year, do not invent annual rows. Treat memory-based sets separately from official papers.
Question practice and error correction
After each set, classify mistakes as definition, exception, numerical, outdated law or careless reading. For a statutory error, write the correcting provision beside the question. For a conceptual error, write a short workplace example.
Reattempt wrong questions after several days without the answer key. A rising score from recognising an answer is less useful than being able to explain why the other three options are wrong.
5 original practice questions
Attempt each question before opening its answer. These exercises are written for concept practice; they are not represented as official UPSC PYQs. Numerical assumptions apply only to the stated question.
